Fire Cider

Why Fire Cider?

I first tried fired cider when my good friend, Bethany, gave me a jar last fall. I had seen various recipes for the tonic and was excited to try.

As a proud lover of anything vinegar based and a holistic health enthusiast, it was calling my name. I loved the taste. I took a tablespoon or two daily and immediately made my own batch.

This fiery tonic is full of ingredients that boost immunity. Apple cider vinegar based to kill bacteria and lower blood sugar. Horseradish to reduce inflammation. Jalapeños and oranges, which are high in vitamin C. Ginger for antioxidant benefits and to fit nausea. And lastly, cinnamon, which is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral.

The recipe below is my adaptation of Good Food Baddie’s Homemade Fire Cider. Her’s is fantastic. I like mine with a little more orange and a little less jalapeño which is what you see below.

Easy to make. Endless ways to enjoy. Give it a shot and let me know how you like it.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 cup peeled and grated / chopped fresh horseradish

  • 1 cup grated/chopped fresh ginger

  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 10 garlic cloves, crushed

  • 1 lemon, sliced

  • 2 oranges, sliced

  • 1 jalapeño pepper, sliced

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

  • 3 springs fresh rosemary

  • 6 springs fresh thyme

  • Roughly 3 cups organic, raw apple cider vinegar

  • 2 quart-sized mason jar & lid

  • Parchment paper

How to assemble:

  1. Add horseradish, ginger, turmeric, jalapeños, onion, oranges, lemon, and garlic to mason jar.

  2. Add fresh rosemary, thyme, and cinnamon sticks.

  3. Pour apple cider vinegar into jar, completely covering the ingredients.

  4. Take a piece of parchment paper, place it under the lid, and seal the jar. This prevents the metal from touching the vinegar.

  5. Use a piece of tape and sharpie to label the date you assembled the fire cider.

  6. Place jar in a cool, dark place for 4 weeks. I like to keep it in my pantry where I’ll see it!

  7. Flip/shake the jar daily to mix ingredients.

  8. After 4 weeks, strain out the ingredients using a cheesecloth or fine mesh stainer. Push on the ingredients to make sure you strain all the liquid out.

  9. Taste the tonic! I prefer it as is, but if too strong, add some honey to taste until palatable.

  10. Take 1-2 tablespoons to boost immunity. Take throughout the day if you feel a cold or flu coming on.

Don’t love the taste? Here are some other ways to use fire cider:

  • Make salad dressing

  • Sautee vegetables

  • Marinade meat or fish

  • Create dips and sauces
